Chapter 18

"You told THOMAS WHAT?" Polly's tone escalated in disbelief, her grip on the steering wheel tightening as we maneuvered through the town towards the veterinary clinic. The air was thick with tension, a far cry from the usual jovial banter accompanying our drives. I had confided in Thomas about hiding the dagger under the café floorboards and had not consulted Polly about the decision. What made matters more complicated was Thomas's offer to help, requiring me to reveal this clandestine decision.

A gust of air blew from the car's vents, doing little to cool the heat of Polly's disbelief. She shook her head as she processed my revelation. "Lola, what were you thinking?" Her eyes flickered towards me briefly before refocusing on the road, concern etched into the furrows of her brow. "That dagger could be evidence! It’s bad enough you took it and hid it just because Jake asked you to. If someone else finds you have it and it is the murder weapon, you and I will be in jail..."

"I know, I know," I sighed, sinking into the cushion of the passenger seat, my fingers worrying the edge of my cardigan. I could still feel the phantom chill of the dagger against my skin. "It seemed like a good decision at the moment. But now everything's become such a mess." I watched the scenery pass by, the shops and trees blending into a blur of color, mirroring my muddled thoughts.

The stern line of Polly's mouth softened, and she glanced at me, her hand leaving the steering wheel for a moment to give my arm a comforting pat. "You were only trying to help Jake." Her voice was softer now, the reproach replaced with understanding. "But from now on, no more secrets between us, and don’t tell anyone else about the hiding spot, promise?" Her green eyes met mine, sincerity shining from their depths.

Her simple gesture, combined with her reassuring words, untied the knot of tension in my chest. I turned to her, my lips curving into a small smile, and gave her hand an appreciative squeeze. "Promise, Polly. No more secrets."
